Today was the beginning of our wonderful journey of New York
City’s borough to visit all it has to show us. Today our journey was to queens
“the nations most diverse county”(B.Gpg 493) . Being that I grew up in queens
this journey had me a little excited. First stop, off the 7 train aka the” “International Express” because it
traverses so many different ethnic communities” ( B.G. pg493), was our visit to
Flushing Meadow Park in Corona. However, before our tour of the park started Meritta
went over some quick walking rules to avoid any unnecessary arguments that
could take place in the busy streets of all the borough’s one of them being “no
milandering” . Of course while walking towards the park “milandering” already
took place resulting in Mike getting into a confrontation with one of the
workers. Although this argument was unnecessary
it broke the nervous tension that all of us seemed to show and got us laughing
and comfortable with each other.
We
then proceeded to the park where we learned about this beautiful park that was
created by Robert Moses the “master road builder” (p.493). This park was big
beautiful and clean and held the most ionic symbol of the park which is the Unisphere.
The symbol represents the World’s fair that took place in 1964-1965. This fair
was the reason why intensive planning took place in the creation of the park.
After all this learning took place intense heat and
intensive walking we were all excited about lunch. I was personally excited cause
we were going to an Indian restaurant in Jackson heights. Although I had Indian
food already and enjoyed it I also enjoy trying other dishes from different
ethnicities. When we got there we realized it was a buffet . My plate included
rice, chicken, roti and a dipping sauce for it. It was so good I went for my
second plate. The herbs and spices that Indians use are really amazing. When I
got home I went to goggled how to make their chicken and found on this you tube link it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeC2Ra6gcRU
but I didn’t get to try it yet.
After that we went to my home town Astoria queens,
specifically Steinway street. Going
there brought up some memories in the past and made me miss it a little.
Leaving there only nine years ago I felt that a lot has changed. Mike stated
that a lot of Greeks lived there in the past and he was right even when I was
living there there was a lot of Greeks but as I stepped foot there today I
noticed the town has become very diverse.
We then headed over to the Museum
of Moving Image. Again not being a fan
of museum however this museum changed that. I really enjoyed this museum. This museum consisted of instruments that were
used in the past to begin film making. I enjoy seeing artifacts in the past
that progressed to modern day technology it shows how the world has evolved and
makes you wonder what technology could be better than what we have today.
This picture of the Vanna White really amazed me by how long
she been around and how elegant she still remains.
The last site that amazed me was when we went to go see art
that were drawn on the walls of the
streets throughout the street. The
artists that drew them came from all over the world such as Japan, Italy and of
course within our hometown America. We met with the owner as he explained how
this might be gone in a while but as of now its still going on and he is just
enjoying every moment of it.
Overall, I really enjoyed the first day, besides the intense
walking. It was really amazing to me how we could visit many exciting and
interesting things all in one day. This day has really has got me excited for
our upcoming classes.
